GPS tracking has taken on many forms. Individuals are looking to protect that which is most important to them. Occasionally, we get the request to track a dog or someone at a party tells me they think we should track dogs. Recently, a person contacted us wanting to protect show horses with GPS tracking. So, there are virtually no limits to where we might use GPS tracking in the future.

At Track What Matters, our main focus is to provide GPS tracking for businesses. Fleet tracking takes on many forms. Recently, we began offering a new GPS tracking device for trailers, containers, and assets. This tracking device is battery powered, highly weather resistant, and just a little bigger than an iPhone. The tracking device’s battery lasts up to 3 years with a “once-a-day” locate plan.

The portability and battery life are just part of the feature set for the GPS tracking device for your assets. Another great feature is the ability to locate “indoors” or under cover. This GPS tracking device doesn’t always have to have a clear view of the sky. That means that it will locate in places were satellite-only GPS tracking devices cannot locate. Labor Savings with GPS Tracking

Many people call “Track What Matters” wanting to save on fuel costs. This was of grave concern in 2008 when diesel prices were over $4.75 per gallon on a national average. The vast majority of our customers do see fuel savings which more than pay for the cost of the GPS tracking devices and service, however, I am always amazed by the labor savings our GPS tracking customers achieve.

I was able to speak with the CPA for a customer in Texas a few days ago. His company does very specialized work which takes their crews throughout Texas and the surrounding states. GPS tracking for their fleet was a natural just to know where their vehicles are traveling. But, their benefits from GPS tracking on their trucks have gone much further. The cost of a single employee for an hour is over $40. Consider that a truck might have up to 3 employees.

The challenge to this company is that they pay from the start of work at the first site to the end of work at the last site. With their trucks and crews sometimes hundreds of miles away, supervision, without GPS tracking, is near impossible. They tried getting their crews to call in on their cell phones when they left the job site. The problem with the cell phones is that it required an employee to call in at a specific time. Of course, accuracy was a little suspect.

So, when they turned to GPS tracking for their trucks, they began to some disturbing things with their routes and labor. The routes their vehicles were traveling showed places were fuel was being wasted due to indirect paths. What was more disturbing was their labor costs. The GPS tracking showed when trucks and crews truly arrived and left jobs. Because of the fleet management system they now had available, the Payroll department was able to verify time sheets. The most glaring discovery was a crew who had reported an excess of 60 labor hours. That’s a cost of over $2,400 in a month! Obviously their GPS tracking does not cost anywhere near as much as that single crew was taking from the company. Consider this, if that crew committed the same act for a year, without the supervision afforded by GPS tracking, the cost to the company in wasted labor would exceed $28,800.

So, fuel savings through GPS tracking are legitimate and real, but every fleet manager and business owner should consider the cost savings in labor that can be attributed to a solid GPS tracking program.

What does it cost to procrastinate? That all depends.

If you procrastinate on your taxes, it costs a lot. If you procrastinate at Valentine’s Day or anniversaries, that can cost a lot.

But what about procrastination related to your business fleet. That can be incredibly expensive.

Last week, I spoke to one customer who estimated problems that might be resolved with GPS tracking were costing him as much as $480,000 annually. Another business owner estimated that GPS tracking could save her 1.5-2 hours of labor per person per day. This morning, I spoke we spoke with another individual who estimated current losses due to issues that could be resolved with GPS tracking in excess of $50,000 annually.

So, how much would you spend on GPS tracking to resolve your issues? If you estimated the cost of GPS tracking was 20% of the cost of fuel and labor losses, would you make the purchase?

It is a simple question, but many business owners put off purchasing GPS tracking because of the cost. This never ceases to amaze me and I see it everyday.

Today, a concerned spouse dared to purchase GPS tracking for a spouse. This person wants to know the truth and has the guts to do something to learn. A lot of business owners can learn from this bold move.
